The last Monday is May, deemed a federal holiday commonly called Memorial Day, is the United States of America’s annual day to honor and remember our deceased service men and women. Those brave Americans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation. This proclamation of Memorial Day calls on Americans to “observe Memorial Day by praying according to their individual religious faith for permanent peace.”

Originally, it was called Decoration Day, in 1868 it was formalized by a “Memorial Day Order” by Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan in 1868.

July 8^th is the deadline to register to vote in the August 2026 primary. Are you registered? Do your friends and family know there is an important election in August?

The Tuesday, August 4th, ballots for Christian county will be posted here;   https://www.christiancountymo.gov/offices/county-clerk/sample-ballots/  Your official Sample Ballot for Christian county will be available before on or before July 5th. By making these public, each citizen has time to research and decide their vote. 

JUST a FEW POINTS ABOUT Amendment 5

TAXES Amendment Five

This measure will be on the AUGUST 4th ballot. 

A couple of points to consider; If you have worked in Missouri for many years, YOU have paid Missouri state income taxes and now that you are retired or nearing retirement, the legislators are asking you to CONTINUE to pay taxes on what you now consume. 

Additionally, there is NO mention of reducing taxes that fund the gluttonous Missouri state budget, only shifting the source of money. In 2021 the state budget was $29 billion (for 6 million citizens) and 2025 state budget was $41 billion. Yes, we do mean BILLION with a B for six million citizens. 

What citizens are being asked to give up

The public is not just being asked to approve a lower income tax. It is being asked to give lawmakers constitutional permission to expand taxes to services and other currently protected transactions later, while also letting those future bills avoid key constitutional guardrails for up to five years.  “may be expanded by legislation to impose taxes on transactions involving any goods and services.”  There is NO SPECIFICATION of the AMOUNT of the proposed sales taxes OR which goods and services will be taxed.  Here is the official measure; the word salad that it is; Swapping income taxes for sales taxes  

May’s meeting sparked a lively discussion on the question, “Does One Vote Really Matter?” — and with several major issues headed to the August 4 ballot, we’re continuing the conversation at our June 1 meeting.

Just because our county may not have a data center doesn't mean there will be zero impact in Christian County.
